The Placitas Chamber of Commerce web site sums it up best:

"Ask three Placitas what they like best about living in Placitas and you may get six different answers. One will say it is being so far from everything, another, being so close to everything — and both will be right. For some it is the peacefulness, for others the proximity to hiking trails. Most will mention the perfect weather, four distinct seasons without harsh extremes. But almost everyone's answer will include something about the views. Many homes look north toward the hills and mesas, all the way to the Jemez range and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains north of Santa Fe. Others face the mountain, that smooth yet imposing spine of the Sandia’s which covers with snow in the winter. Some homes get both views. In another pleasant paradox of Placitas life, these comforting views are always the same, and yet they change constantly thanks to the sun's evolving angles and the seasonal rebirth of high desert flowers and shrubs."

The exit to Placitas is only about 10 minutes north of the Albuquerque city limit towards Santa Fe, and this community has some nice art galleries and shops in addition to the things mentioned above. There are also many artists working in Placitas and there are a few days each year where the artists open up their home studios and organize a studio tour. There is also an unmaintained dirt road up to the crest of the Sandia Mountains that's adventurous to drive. We like to go here for a short hike up to the Sandia Man Cave. There are a few picnic areas with tables too so we usually pack a picnic.

Houses in Placitas traditionally were artistic and used to be known as the place where Hippies lived. Well, I haven't seen a "hippie" for a while, and especially not when I've been in Placitas. The homes are beautiful, usually Southwestern and blending in with the colors of the area. Most are on an acre or more and oriented to take advantage of some view. Placitas covers quite a bit of area so from Albuquerque it can be 15 minutes to home, or 30 minutes, depending upon where in Placitas you are.
